A Look at the Numbers - Update on SB213 & HB188
Wed, Feb 10th 2010, 13:52
First, the status of HB-188 and SB-213…HB-188 received a “Do Pass” from the House Business & Industry Committee last night. It now goes to the House Judiciary Committee. SB-213 is on the calendar to be heard on the Senate floor this morning.
Now, for a new perspective on how corporation premiums would increase if the bills do not pass…
A large orthopedic practice currently pays $14,010 for their corporation under the Medical Malpractice Act (MMA). If we are unsuccessful in passing HB-188/SB-213, the corporation will end up paying $171,628 for the same $200K/$600K occurrence policy or $254,842 for a $1M/$3M policy - just to cover their corporation.
A large OB/GYN practice that currently pays $11,050 for their corporation under the MMA would end up paying $204,849 for the same $200K/$600 policy or $304,171 for a $1M/$3M policy - just to cover their corporation.
A solo FP currently paying $1,300 under the MMA would end up with a $3,317 bill for the same $200K/$600 occurrence policy or $4,925 for a $1M/$3M policy - just to cover their corporation.
NMMS asks that you please contact both your Senator and Representative and ask they support these bills. Even if you do not have a personal conversation with your legislators, please call the Capitol switchboard (505-986-4300), ask for your legislators’ office, and leave a message with their staff. If you know other legislators, please give them a call or email also…especially those on the House Judiciary Committee (please see list below).
