Medical Legal Panel
New Mexico Medical Review Commission (Medical-Legal
Panel)
The New Mexico Medical Society CME committee has established New Mexico
Specific CME credit and the New Mexico Medical Board has
agreed to accept these for relicensure.
New Mexico Specific CME credits are awarded to physicians who
participate in the New Mexico Medical Review Commission (Medical-Legal
panels). Physicians earn two New Mexico Specific Category 1 CME credits
for each panel hearing due to the educational benefits of these reviews.
The Commission is the mandatory malpractice review panel consisting of
volunteers from the medical and law professions. The medical-legal panels
review malpractice cases before they can proceed to court. The panel has
managed to ease the burden on the court system. Only 29% of the cases
heard through the Commission are filed in court.
Hearings are Monday through Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the Marshall
Building in the conference rooms of the New Mexico Medical Society. The
average case lasts 2 ½ to 3 hours. Out of town panelists will be paid for
mileage or reimbursed airfare.
