The Clinical Prevention Initiative (CPI) is a
collaboration of the New Mexico Medical Society and the New Mexico
Department of Health with the goal of improving the quality and enhancing the
delivery of clinical preventive services in the state. CPI was
created to promote and support practice commitment and system
development for selected high priority services, to
facilitate integration of preventive care in physician offices, and
to provide better services to patients across the state.
A recently published article provides more information on the history, structure, role and accomplishments of the CPI "The New Mexico Clinical Prevention Initiative: A Statewide Prevention Partnership" Public Health Reports/May-June 2007/Vol 122.
A steering committee, representing major health care providers and payors in
New Mexico, meets quarterly to guide the project. Eight interventions are the heart of CPI:
- Chlamydia
and Gonorrhea Screening and Treatment
- Colorectal
Cancer Screening
- Healthier Weight [under construction]
- Immunizations
- Mammography
Screening and Follow-Up
- Problem Drinking Screening and Intervention
- Tobacco
Use Prevention and Cessation
- Unintended Pregnancy Prevention
In order to provide better oversight and expedite more urgent decisions, the
Governance
Guidelines
established an Executive Committee to be comprised of four appointed positions
and three positions nominated by the CPI steering committee. The four appointed
members are the NMMS President, the DOH Chief Medical Officer, the co-chairperson
for the NMMS [appointed annually by the NMMS president], and the co-chairperson
for DOH [appointed annually by the DOH CMO]. The current committee consists
of Albert Kwan MD, Lynn Bryant MD, Bruce Mann MD, Richard Kozoll MD, MPH,
David Espey MD, Susan Baum MD, MPH and Karen Armitage MD.
