Unintended Pregnancy Prevention

Facts:

  • For the 15-19 year old age group, New Mexico has the 4th highest pregnancy rate in the nation. (Guttmacher Institute, September 2006)
  • The most recent data available indicates 44% of New Mexico women giving birth stated that the pregnancy was unintended (in 2002: 33.8% mistimed, 10.5% unwanted). *
  • Although more contraceptive methods are available than at any other time in history, 57% of women not trying to get pregnant were not using a contraceptive method in 2002.*
  • Among women not using contraception, 29% cited difficulty obtaining contraception and 14% reported side effects with their method as reasons for not using contraception.*

Goals:

  • To increase the knowledge and understanding of contraceptive options of New Mexico healthcare providers.
  • To decrease the rate of unintended pregnancy in New Mexico.

CPI Intervention:

  • The workgroup developed a grid of all available contraceptive methods to provide introductory information for providers and patients. All-Options Contraception Grid
